US-Canada Cross-Border Logistics from Detroit

For automotive shipments to assembly plants in Ontario, we often prefer the Bridge.

USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) is the free trade agreement replacing NAFTA, effective July 2020. It eliminates or reduces duties on goods meeting North American origin requirements. For auto parts, at least 75% of content must originate in the US, Canada, or Mexico. For other manufactured goods, the threshold is typically 62.5%. USMCA compliance is critical for cost management—goods that qualify save thousands in duties. We verify origin eligibility and ensure your shipments claim preferential USMCA rates.

For imports from Canada into the US, a US customs broker is required to clear goods through CBP. For US exports to Canada, you technically don't need a broker if you handle Canadian customs yourself, but having a broker who knows both US and Canadian regulations saves time and avoids costly mistakes. Pre-cleared shipments with clean documentation often clear in 30 minutes to 2 hours. Non-pre-cleared or shipments requiring inspection can take 4–8 hours. We typically file documentation 24 hours in advance and coordinate with CBP and Canadian customs in advance. During peak times (rush hours, weekends), even pre-cleared shipments can face queuing delays. We monitor real-time queue times and schedule shipments strategically to minimize wait times.

Most manufactured goods, auto parts, raw materials, and machinery can move cross-border duty-free or at preferential rates under USMCA if they meet origin rules. Restricted items include certain agricultural products, hazardous materials (with additional compliance), and controlled items. USMCA-eligible goods typically have 0% duty. Non-eligible goods face standard HTS tariff rates, usually 2.5–15% depending on the commodity. Automotive parts under HTS codes 8700–8799 are often 0–5% if USMCA-compliant. We calculate estimated duties before shipment and help you understand the cost impact. The Gordie Howe International Bridge is a new US-Canada crossing under development, connecting Windsor, Ontario to Detroit, Michigan. It's expected to open in 2025–2026 and will add significant capacity to the Detroit-Windsor corridor. When it opens, we'll likely use it for certain routes to bypass Ambassador Bridge congestion. We'll keep clients updated as capacity increases and new routing options become available.

CBP or Canadian customs can examine shipments for compliance verification, security screening, or regulatory review. When a hold occurs, we immediately contact the examining officer, gather additional information or documentation, and work toward expedited release. Yes. Canadian suppliers exporting to US customers work with us on the US side while coordinating with their Canadian broker on the Canadian side. We receive shipments, clear through CBP, and can provide warehousing, fulfillment, or further distribution. Many Canadian manufacturers use us as their US-side logistics partner, particularly suppliers to Detroit-area manufacturers and assembly plants.

A bonded carrier is a licensed transportation company authorized by CBP to move goods under bond (insurance), meaning they can transport shipments without paying duties upfront. This is useful for in-transit shipments or goods moving between bonded facilities. Most cross-border shipments benefit from bonded carrier transport.
